BACK IN OCTOBER, we compiled a list of all of the shitty things that Nicki Minaj has been up to over the last year or two. Here’s a quick summary:
She made insulting and stigmatising comments about sex workers.
Her latest album Queen featured some homophobic lyrics.
She stood over the #ChunLiChallenge in which her fans were perpetuating racist Asian stereotypes.
She lauded XXXTentacion, a rapper who admitted to stabbing eight people and abusing his ex-girlfriend.
And she had multiple collaborations with Daniel Hernandez (or 6ix9ine/Tekashi69), a rapper who pled guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance this year and is currently awaiting trial for racketeering charges, conspiracy to commit murder, a charge of armed robbery and illegal possession of a semi-automatic rifle (while he was on probation for his previous charge of filming himself with a naked 13-year-old girl).
As a very successful and popular 36-year-old who’s worth $75 million and probably meets hundreds of different people every day, you’d think Nicki Minaj would have her pick of eligible bachelors. But between her association with XXXTentacion, and her friendship with Tekashi69, it’s clear that the ability to resist the urge to be violent towards women isn’t the most important thing on Nicki’s list.
So naturally, she’s okay with dating convicted sex offender Kenneth Petty. When Nicki uploaded photographs of her new beau to Instagram, TMZ began to do a little digging on him to find out who he is, since he’s not a well-known celebrity, but an old friend of Nicki’s from Queens, NY.

It turns out that Kenneth Petty was convicted of first-degree attempted rape in April, 1995 when he tried to force a 16-year-old girl to have sex with him by using a sharp object. He spent four years in NY State Prison, and when he was eventually released he ended up in jail again for seven years for first-degree manslaughter after he shot a man named Lamont Robinson “with a loaded handgun multiple times”. He was released in 2013.
According to People, because Petty is a level two registered sex offender, he is classed as being a ‘moderate risk of repeat offence‘, and as a result will remain on the register for life.
When fans of Nicki aired their disapproval, the rapper took to her Instagram comments to defend Petty. She wrote, “He was 15, she was 16… in a relationship. But go awf, internet. Y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life.” Since the news broke, Nicki Minaj has turned off Instagram comments. She also got in touch with TMZ, where she insisted that Kenneth was falsely convicted because he had been in a relationship with the victim and suggested that the victim’s mother filed the charges because she disliked Kenneth.
As completely bizarre as this relationship is, Nicki has been preparing us for this for a while now.
